The brown bin
Stoke-on-Trent's garden waste collection is a paid opt-in service. When it started in April 2024 it was £40 per bin per year. The council's sign-up page for April 2026 to March 2027 shows both £40 and £42, so check the price when you register. Bins are emptied every two weeks, 25 times a year, and the price is the same however late in the year you join.
The tips
Hanford and Burslem take garden, grass and tree cuttings for composting. Both are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Soil and turf count as "soil and hardcore", so beyond the free DIY allowance they're £3.15 a bag. See tip charges.
Bigger jobs
Clearing an overgrown garden, taking out a hedge or lifting a lawn fills far more than a bin, and paying by the bag at the tip adds up. A licensed garden waste collection takes it in one go, and for lots of soil a grab lorry is usually cheapest.
