The green bin
Sheffield's garden waste service costs £66.58 for 20 collections over 12 months, with a short break over Christmas and New Year. You can join at any time, and the 12 months start from when you sign up.
Goes in: grass, hedge and plant clippings, leaves, prunings, small branches, twigs, weeds, cut flowers and chipped bark.
Stays out: soil, stones, rubble, sawdust, large branches, plant pots, plastic bags, pond weed, mulch, Japanese knotweed, and waste from professional gardeners.
The tips
You can take garden waste free to any of the five Sheffield tips, 9.30am to 3.30pm in winter. Check which day your nearest one is closed, and remember a trailer needs a permit.
Bigger jobs
An overgrown garden, hedge removal or a pile of soil is more than a bin can take, and the green bin won't take soil or large branches at all. A licensed garden waste collection loads it all, and for lots of soil a grab lorry is often cheapest.
