The brown-lidded bin
- A garden waste permit costs £40 per bin per year, whatever size the bin is
- The current permits run from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027
- Bins are emptied every two weeks, with a pause over Christmas
- Sign up online through MyAccount, by phone on 08085 834333, or at Central Library. Collections start once the permit sticker is on the bin
- You can cancel for a full refund within 14 days of paying, but not after
Goes in: grass, shredded hedge trimmings, leaves, flowers, weeds, small twigs and branches, and clean straw or hay.
Stays out: plastic and black bags, plant pots, rubble or bricks, tree stumps, large amounts of soil or turf, weedkiller and pet waste. Coventry's new food waste service, which the council said would start in September 2026, gives food its own container, so food no longer goes in the brown bin.
The tip
The Bar Road tip takes garden waste, but you need to book, show proof of a Coventry address and unload it yourself. Soil and rubble from home DIY are limited to 6 bags of up to 25kg a day.
Big garden jobs
Taking out a hedge, clearing an overgrown garden or lifting a lawn makes far more than one bin can hold, and the council bulky collection won't take garden waste, fence panels or bundles of wood. A licensed garden waste collection loads it all in one visit. For lots of soil or turf, a grab lorry is often cheapest.
