The brown bin

Bradford charges for garden waste collection. For 2026/27 the council's subscription is £62 for 12 collections, covering 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027, and an extra bin is £47. You pay all at once. You can sign up at any time in the year, but the full fee applies with no reduction for missed collections, and there are no refunds if you move house. Collections are one every four weeks, and the council says there are no collections after 18 December 2026, and they restart on 19 January 2027.

What goes in

Goes in: grass cuttings, leaves, hedge clippings, twigs and small branches cut into small pieces, and garden plants and weeds.

Stays out: soil, rubble, stones, plant pots, plant ties, glass, metal, food including peelings, dog and cat mess, pet bedding and straw. The lid must close, and only what is inside the bin is collected, so extra bags at the side are left.

The tips

"Green waste" is on the accepted list at all five Bradford tips, which is the way to deal with the winter gap. You need a permit in the car. The price list for Bowling Back Lane and Keighley also shows "green waste" at £10.50, and the council doesn't say who that applies to, so ask on site if you are charged.

The bulky collection

A one-off clear-out can go on the council bulky collection: one bag or one bundle (up to 4ft long) counts as one item, and three items cost £30.

Bigger jobs

An overgrown garden, a removed hedge or a pile of soil is more than the brown bin can take, and soil isn't allowed in it at all. A licensed garden waste collection loads it all, and for lots of soil a grab lorry is often cheapest.
