Price and limits
The council charges £5 for each item it uplifts, and takes up to five items on each uplift. You do not pay if you or someone in your household gets Council Tax reduction. Other discounts, such as single occupancy, do not count. Items must be on the pavement in front of your property by 7am on the day, and only the items listed at booking are taken.
How items are counted
Each item must be liftable by two people. Broken-down pieces count separately, so a bed frame, a headboard and a mattress are three items. Large sofas and L-shaped sofas that need unclipping count as separate items. Tie loose items and wood bundles securely, and tape glass.
How to book
- Fill in the bulky waste form on the council website. A mygovscot myaccount is optional
- List every item, because only listed items are taken
- Check your email for the confirmation, including the spam folder
- Booking is offline on Sundays from 4am until 11am
- For an assisted collection, book first, then email special.uplifts@edinburgh.gov.uk with your address, booking reference and where each item is
What it does not take
- Garden waste, rubble and building materials
- Car tyres, car batteries, gas or oxygen cylinders and fire extinguishers
- Pianos, safes, storage heaters, cast iron baths and household wheelie bins
- Items over seven feet long, and full sheds booked as one item
- Asbestos, other hazardous waste, clinical waste, oil and paint
- Electric or manual wheelchairs, slot or arcade machines, spot welders and barbed wire
- Garden poles with cement still attached, and bundles of wood not tied securely or with nails and screws in

For these the council suggests a licensed specialist waste management company. More than five items? Book again or try house clearance.
