Taking it to the tip
The Recycle for Greater Manchester guide says you can take carpets to a recycling centre. Chichester Street and Spring Vale take household waste from your own home free. Cut the carpet into strips, roll it and tape it so it is easy to lift. Vans need a free van permit.
The council collection
The council lists furniture, white goods and electricals, TVs and computers, garden furniture and equipment, children's items, mobility aids and household fixtures such as sinks, toilets and radiators. It says the full list appears when you apply. Carpets are not named. If you want to try, ask when you apply, and remember items must be outside by 7am on your bin day.
Council or tip not working out? Tell us what needs clearing and licensed local companies will call you with prices. Free, no obligation.

Old carpet removed by a fitter or tradesperson you paid is business waste, and Recycle for Greater Manchester will not take it at any site. Ask the fitter to take it away as part of the job.
