Stoke-on-Trent City Council says vehicle tyres aren't accepted at either tip, Hanford or Burslem. Tyres are also on the list of things the council bulky collection won't take.
Your options
| Option | Good for |
|---|---|
| Tyre fitter or garage | When you're getting new tyres fitted. Most will take the old ones, often for a small fee |
| Licensed waste carrier | A pile of old tyres, or tyres along with other rubbish. See rubbish removal |
| Specialist tyre recycler | Larger numbers of tyres |
Mention tyres when you ask for a quote, as many companies charge per tyre for proper recycling.
Avoid cheap tyre dumpers
Old tyres are often fly-tipped. If you pay someone to take them and they dump them, you can be fined. In England, councils can fine householders up to £600 for giving waste to an unlicensed carrier, and up to £1,000 for fly-tipping. Always check the waste carrier licence.
