Council collection
The council bulky collection counts a mattress as one item, so you could add a wardrobe and a bed base (dismantled) for the same £30. Book online, pay before the day, and tell the council about any other items at least two days ahead. The council says soft furnishings like mattresses should be covered. Nothing is taken from inside your house, shed or garage.
The tips
"Mattresses" appears on the council's accepted list in its tips policy. The pages for each tip show a shorter list that leaves furniture out, so confirm before loading the car. You need a resident permit. See the five Bradford tips.
Private collection
A licensed single item collector will usually take a mattress away from the room it is in. UK guide prices are about £20 to £50, depending on the size of the mattress and the stairs. Compare it with the council's £30 for three items.
Handy tips
- Wrap or cover the mattress, and keep it dry
- Dismantle the bed base before the council comes, as it only takes bases that have been taken apart
- If you are buying a new mattress, ask the shop whether it will take the old one away
