The rule landlords miss
Salford Council says any waste left behind after a tenant moves out is no longer household waste but commercial waste, which is chargeable, and that the landlord is responsible for removing it. That changes what you can do with it.
Why the tips are out
The council says commercial or trade waste cannot be taken to any household waste recycling centre. So loading a van and driving the old tenant's furniture to Cobden Street or Lumns Lane is not allowed. See Salford tips.

The council's landlord page points to its bulky waste form for up to ten bags of general rubbish, and to a waste removal estimate form for larger amounts. Its bulky page lists clearing a residential dwelling as needing a separate quote. Collections are aimed at 7 to 14 days away, which can mean days of lost rent between tenancies.
Using a waste carrier
- Get a quote from a licensed company
- Check their waste carrier registration on the Environment Agency register
- Ask where the waste is going
- Keep the waste transfer note: the council says a business asked for one gets 14 days to produce it, or faces a fine of up to £300
Landlords also have to give tenants proper bins and tell them how to use the collections, according to the council.
