Who needs a permit
- Vans and pick-ups
- Cars towing a trailer longer than 1.4m
- The vehicle must be under 3.5 tonnes
Normal cars don't need one. The permit is only for Gypsum Close. Freemen's Common doesn't let vans or pick-ups in for normal waste, even with a permit. The only exception is dropping off asbestos or chemicals.
Full or temporary permit
| Permit | Visits | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Full | 12 visits over 12 months | Your own van, used for your own household waste |
| Temporary | 3 visits over 1 month | A borrowed or hired van, or clearing a relative's or friend's home. Max four a year per household |
A permit is only valid for the vehicle named on it, and you can only hold one at a time.
How to apply
- Log in or create an account on Leicester City Council's My Account
- Apply for a full or temporary waste permit, with your vehicle details
- When you visit, bring photo ID and proof of address dated in the last 12 months. A UK driving licence covers both
- If you haven't moved in yet, bring a utility bill, deeds or tenancy agreement for the new address
Yearly limits
This is what catches most people out. Over the life of a permit, you can only bring:
| Material | Limit per permit year |
|---|---|
| Soil, bricks and rubble | Six 25kg bags |
| Fitted kitchen units | Four |
| Bathroom suite items | Four |
| Doors | Four |
| Windows | Four complete units |
Once you reach a limit, that material isn't accepted again until the permit runs out. So one kitchen refit can use up your whole year.
What a permit doesn't allow
- Landlord clear-outs, trade work or paid tip runs
- Waste that isn't from your own home
- Asbestos or chemicals at Gypsum Close. Those go to Freemen's Common, which lets vans in for these without a permit
If you're a landlord, a business, or you've been paid to take someone's waste, you can't use the household site. Businesses can use the paid trade waste centre at Gypsum Close.
Easier options
- Hired a van for one clear-out? A rubbish removal firm brings its own van, does the loading and needs no permit. It can cost less than van hire plus fuel and your time
- Kitchen or bathroom refit? Builders' waste removal takes the lot, with no yearly limits
- Clearing a rental or a relative's house? House clearance in Leicester
No van, no permit, no limits
