The council approved these and they took effect on 1 October 2025. Its bulky collection page also says dumping waste in public places is illegal and can lead to court action and a fine of up to £50,000.

Your duty of care

If you hand your waste to someone, you are responsible for checking they are allowed to take it. Paying a man with a van who then dumps it can land the penalty on you as well as him. The tips are for your own household waste, and the council says it may challenge the origin of waste where someone visits often or arrives with large volumes.

How to check a carrier

  1. Ask for their waste carrier registration number and check it on the Environment Agency register
  2. Ask where the waste is going
  3. Get a written price and a waste transfer note, and keep it
  4. Be wary of cash-only offers from adverts with no company name

Not your waste

If someone dumps rubbish near your home, report it to the council through its contact page. Don't move or open it. See house clearance in Bradford if you need a legitimate clear-out.
