Asbestos disposal in Leicester: where to take it

Asbestos can be found in older garage roofs, sheds, pipes and boards. You can't put it in your bin, and most tips won't take it. Here's where it can go in and around Leicester, and when to call a specialist instead.

Leicester city

• Freemen's Common (LE2 7SQ) takes household asbestos
• Cement-bonded only, double-wrapped in plastic
• No more than 8 sheets per visit
• Call 0116 254 3568 before you go, as it's only accepted when there's space
• Vans can bring asbestos here without a permit, though they're not allowed in for normal waste
• Gypsum Close does not take asbestos in any vehicle

Leicestershire county sites

• Taken at Coalville, Kibworth, Mountsorrel and Whetstone only, with an asbestos waste permit
• £10 per sheet (about 2.4m x 1.2m), per 3m of guttering or pipe, or per tub
• Limits: 30 sheets or bags, 10 lengths of guttering, 1 water tank
• Double wrapped or bagged in clear polythene
• Blue, brown or non-cement-bonded asbestos is not accepted
• Mountsorrel is closed until early December 2026. See Whetstone tip

Staying safe

• Don't break, drill, sand or cut it. Damage releases fibres
• Dampen it and handle it as little as possible
• Wrap it whole in heavy plastic, then wrap again
• Wear a disposable FFP3 mask, gloves and disposable overalls

When to call a specialist

• You're not sure what it is
• It's lagging, insulation board or anything that crumbles
• It's more than a few sheets, or it's still fixed in place
• It's damaged or broken

Normal waste collection companies won't take asbestos. Once it's gone, if you have other rubbish from the same job, we can help with that.
