Rules and charges in short
Whetstone follows the same rules as every Leicestershire County Council site: no booking, a free permit for vans and bigger trailers, a free DIY allowance of 100 litres once a week, then £3 a tub for rubble, soil or plasterboard (card only). Tyres aren't taken. The full list is in our Leicester area tips guide.
Good to know
- Asbestos: cement-bonded only, with a county asbestos permit, at £10 per sheet (or per 3m of pipe or guttering). Limits are 30 sheets or bags, 10 lengths of guttering and 1 water tank. Blue, brown and non-cement-bonded asbestos aren't accepted
- Liquid paint is accepted with a paint permit, if there's space
- Chemicals aren't accepted
- Plasterboard and hardcore are accepted, with charges above the free allowance. Plasterboard must be kept separate
If the tip won't work for you
Whetstone tip is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and the free DIY allowance doesn't go far on a big job. If you can't wait, have no car, or have more than the allowance, a licensed company can take it from your home in Blaby: see rubbish removal, single items, builders' waste or grab hire.
Blaby District Council bulky waste collection
Blaby District Council collects large household items for a fee:
- £32.50 for the first item if you book online (£35 by phone)
- £22 for each extra item
- A maximum of six items per collection
- These are the council's 2026/27 prices
Two items would cost £54.50 online and three would be £76.50. For a few items, a private collection is often similar or cheaper, and they'll usually carry it out for you.
