Who can use it
The council scheme is for private households only, and asbestos can only be accepted at Bowling Back Lane. It takes asbestos cement, such as the hard sheets found on garage and shed roofs. No maximum amount is stated, but you declare the number of wrapped bags when you book.
How to book
Complete the council's online "request asbestos disposal" form at least 24 hours ahead. You need the date and time, your vehicle make, model and registration, the number of wrapped bags, confirmation that it is wrapped correctly and, for a hire vehicle, the hire agreement. The council's page lists no phone number or email address, only its contact form.
Wrapping
Wrap the cement in two layers of heavy-duty plastic sheeting (building grade) and seal it with parcel tape. The council says an improperly wrapped load will be refused. Wear disposable overalls and a mask designed for asbestos, wet the material before moving it, and don't break, sand or drill it.
On the day
- Bring a driving licence, current council tax bill or vehicle log book (or an employer's letter for a company car) showing the address the asbestos came from
- You must lift the waste into the skip yourself. Staff can't help for safety reasons
- It has to be easy to carry and fit through a 1m by 1m opening that is 1.1m off the ground
- You also need your resident permit for the visit. See the permit guide
Other types of asbestos
Other asbestos types, like insulation board, need specialist handling and aren't covered. If you aren't sure what you have, get expert advice before touching it. A licensed asbestos contractor is the route for anything the council scheme excludes.
