Rules and charges in short
Barwell follows the same rules as every Leicestershire County Council site: no booking, a free permit for vans and bigger trailers, a free DIY allowance of 100 litres once a week, then £3 a tub for rubble, soil or plasterboard (card only) (but see the plasterboard note below). Tyres aren't taken. The full list is in our Leicester area tips guide.
Good to know
- The county council's notice for Barwell says household batteries, plasterboard and scrap metal are currently not accepted, even though they appear on the usual list. Check before you take them
- Asbestos, chemicals and liquid paint aren't accepted here. Whetstone takes asbestos and liquid paint with a permit
- Business waste goes to Whetstone Waste Transfer Station, for a charge
- Upholstered seating like sofas is accepted, subject to conditions
If the tip won't work for you
Barwell tip is closed Thursday and Friday, and the free DIY allowance doesn't go far on a big job. If you can't wait, have no car, or have more than the allowance, a licensed company can take it from your home in Hinckley: see rubbish removal, single items, builders' waste or grab hire.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council bulky waste collection
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council collects large household items for a fee:
- £42 for up to three items such as tables and wardrobes, then £13 for each extra item
- £42 for up to two upholstered items such as sofas and armchairs, then £18 for each extra item
- A maximum of five items per booking. A few very large items count as two
- Items must be left at the edge of your property next to the road
- Some benefits qualify for a reduced price. Check the council's concessions page
At £42 for a single sofa, a private collection can cost about the same, and they'll usually carry it out of the house for you.
