What to check before you book anyone
Whoever you choose, a few quick checks protect you. If your waste ends up dumped, the person who handed it over can be held responsible.
- Ask for their waste carrier registration number and check it on the public register for your part of the UK.
- Get the price in writing, including whether VAT is added and what is not included.
- Ask where the waste is going. A registered carrier should be able to tell you.
- Get a waste transfer note or receipt when the job is done, and keep it.
- Be wary of unsolicited offers on doorsteps or social media from people who cannot give you a registration number.

How do I know a waste company is legitimate?
Anyone who carries waste for others as part of a business needs to be registered as a waste carrier. Ask for their registration number and check it on the public register: gov.uk waste carrier register check (England), SEPA (Scotland), Natural Resources Wales or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. If you hand waste to someone who is not registered and it is dumped, you could be held responsible.
